Supporting Loved Ones Through Grief

August 30th is National Grief Awareness Day. At some point in life each of us will be affected by loss. The ebbs and flows of grief look different for everyone and coping with loss comes in many forms. Remember that healing takes time and the loss will forever be a part of someone's journey through life.

Finding the right words to say when a loved one is grieving can be hard. We want nothing more than to take their pain away and ease the burden. Even if it feels like you don’t have all the right answers, it is important to keep showing up and offering your support through their grieving journey.  Sometimes, your presence is all that is needed to make a difference in lifting their spirit and offering hope for the future.

Here are some more things you can do to help a loved one who is navigating through grief:

  • Send flowers or cards
  • Deliver or cook meals
  • Help with household chores
  • Regularly call or meet up in person
  • Give a positive outlook for the future
  • Offer hope
  • Avoid any judgements
  • Help run errands
  • Lend an actively listening ear

Reaching out and giving support in any way you can will show your loved one they are not alone, they are loved, and there is hope for the future.
