Mental Illness: What to Watch For
May is Mental Health Awareness Month
Since 1949, the United States has recognized May as National Mental Health Awareness Month. Every year, we use this opportunity to continue fighting stigma around mental illness, and to provide resources and support for those struggling with their mental health in our country and around the world.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the average delay between mental illness symptom onset and treatment is 11 years. Although taking the first steps for treatment can be difficult, it’s important to seek help as soon as possible if you or a loved one are experiencing signs of a mental illness. That’s why it’s important to recognize the signs and symptoms.
Each illness has its own symptoms, but common signs of mental illness in adults can include the following:
- Excessive worrying or fear
- Feeling very sad or low
- Problems concentrating
- Prolonged or strong feelings of irritability or anger
- Avoiding friends or social activities
- Changes in sleeping or eating habits
- Ongoing physical ailments without other causes (such as headache, stomach aches, etc.)
