How Does NeuroStar Work?

NeuroStar is the top physician-recommended TMS treatment for patients diagnosed with MDD and OCD who have not been successful with medication. Clinicians recommend this treatment for those who cannot achieve symptomatic relief from their MDD or OCD from medication alone.

NeuroStar’s effectiveness is backed by extensive research. One study demonstrated an improvement in depression symptoms in 83% of patients. In as little as two or three weeks following their first NeuroStar treatment, Riverview patients experienced measurable improvement in their depression symptoms, including elevated mood, reduced depression days, and an increased desire for social engagement.

NeuroStar has been proven to have long-lasting results for patients who present with medication-resistant depression and is the only TMS treatment proven to be effective for one year. There have been 6.1 million NeuroStar treatments to date that have been performed on 169,000 people who met the criteria for being a good candidate for the treatment.

Understanding the Science Behind NeuroStar

Mental health disorders start in the brain. In certain regions, particularly those that regulate mood, emotion, and behavior, patients who are diagnosed with MDD and OCD experience lowered brain activity compared to nonpatients. Often, it is this lowered brain activity that causes the symptoms of MDD and OCD, which may be challenging for people to manage with medication alone.

NeuroStar aims to stimulate these areas of the brain and could help a patient regulate their emotion and mood. Over time, NeuroStar works to train the brain to improve activity on its own to manage symptoms.

How Does NeuroStar Treatment Work?

NeuroStar Advanced TMS Therapy is delivered at our Riverview clinic and does not require anesthesia. Throughout the appointment, you will be awake, alert, and comfortable.

During treatment, a medical specialist will place the NeuroStar device against your head. Pulses of electromagnetic energy will be delivered through this device and to strategic treatment areas in the brain. These electromagnetic pulses are safe, and no adverse effects have been reported in clinical trials. Following the NeuroStar treatment, you can resume any regular activities.
