NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is FDA-cleared for adults with major depressive disorder who have not found satisfactory relief from antidepressant medication, and as an add-on treatment for adolescents ages 15 to 21 with depression. It is also cleared to help reduce the anxiety symptoms that often occur with depression in adults.
You may be a good candidate if depression is still affecting your daily life despite medication, if side effects have made antidepressants hard to tolerate, or if you would prefer a non-drug option. The PHQ-9 questionnaire above can help you gauge the severity of your symptoms before you talk with our team.
Because TMS uses magnetic fields, it is not recommended for people with non-removable conductive, ferromagnetic or other magnetic-sensitive metal in or near the head, such as aneurysm clips or coils, cochlear implants, implanted stimulators or bullet fragments. Standard dental fillings are generally not a concern.
Your provider will also review your history of seizures, other medical conditions and current medications during a psychiatric evaluation to make sure TMS is safe for you. Learn more about who is not a good candidate for TMS.
A typical course involves in-office sessions five days a week for about six weeks, followed by a short taper. You stay awake and alert during treatment, and you can drive yourself home and return to your normal activities right away. Most patients tolerate TMS well; the most common side effect is mild scalp discomfort at the treatment site that usually fades within the first week or two.
Many insurance plans cover TMS for depression. Read how NeuroStar works, review insurance coverage, or request a free consultation at our Tampa, Riverview or Coral Gables office.
